Meeting standards under pressure
The following article was written by Allied Heat Transfer’s Director of Engineering, Simon England, and published in the June/July 2020 edition ofAustralasian Drilling magazine. With drill rigs incorporating equipment operating at high pressure, temperature, or a combination of both, it pays to ensure they meet legislated requirements. Pressure equipment is hazardous and should be operated, maintained, and inspected by competent personnel. Common pieces are receivers and sepa

Specifying the most economical oil cooler
We often have requests to provide coolers such as “My oil is at 80 °C, I need it to be 60 °C, please quote me a cooler doing 80 °C down to 60 °C from 100 L/min”. This almost always results in a cooler larger than required. Your system doesn’t go from 60 °C up to 80 °C in one pass so the cooling doesn’t have to remove it in one pass either. Maintaining an operating temperature is about balancing the heat generated by the system with a cooler removing the same amount at an idea

Simulating air-cooler header and fan performance informs physical testing plans
Both tubeside and airside behavior affect the overall performance of an air cooler. Two concerns with air-cooled heat exchanger (ACHE) operation are two-phase process-side maldistribution in headers and misrated airside fan performance. At HTRI’s Research & Technology Center (RTC), we are developing plans to construct a header box for advanced tubeside analysis. In addition, we want to identify differences between the actual and rated air delivery of the Air-Cooled Unit (ACU)

Tube expansion joint testing Perth
When forming tube-to-tubesheet expansion joints, everyone knows the rule of thumb guidelines published by tube expanding equipment suppliers and in text books, but do they know why that range is proposed, and what happens if it is exceeded? If the joint doesn’t seal within the range what do you do? Pull the tube and try another one, potentially damaging the tubesheet and tube hole? Or do you keep going into an unknown region and hope for the best? Allied Heat Transfer is ofte

Low Noise Cooling System Installed at BHP
BHP needed a company that could design and manufacture a cooling system capable of rejecting its heat load but fit within in a specified space and have an operating noise level of no more than 80 bB(A) at 1m. Allied Heat Transfer were contracted by BHP to manufacture the Air Cooled Heat Exchanger which subsequent to testing was capable of meeting all the customer’s requirements with a noise level of only 75 dB(A) at 1 m.

Fatigue Testing of Coolers
A new cyclic fatigue test machine has been commissioned at Allied Heat Transfer. Obviously in a business that manufactures heat exchangers and pressure vessels the testing of product is of critical importance. Finished product is tested in accordance with the applicable international standard and our compliance with the test procedure is certified by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA). In addition to hydrostatic testing and when required we also carry out

Power Station Project Completion
The last of the modular power station lube oil cooling systems for Rio Tinto rolls out of the workshop at Allied Heat Transfer. The turn key cooling system designed with serviceability in mind allows regular maintenance without needing to shutdown the system. Parts such as cooling panels and fans can be replaced whilst the system is still operational, this is a giant leap forward compared to the regular finned tube style heat exchangers that require a shutdown to perform main
